College Prep Counseling is a private educational consulting business with the goal of helping high-school students identify and gain admission to the colleges that best fit their social, academic, and career aspirations. Located in both Solana Beach, California and Manchester, Massachusetts, we serve mostly students from the North County area of San Diego and the North Shore area of Massachusetts. We also occasionally work with clients in other areas of the U.S. via telephone, email, and the postal service.
As a high-school senior, Beth Pickett, the founder of College Prep Counseling, turned down admission offers from Brown, Wellesley, Georgetown, and UC Berkeley to attend Stanford University, where she graduated with distinction (top 10%).
After college, she became an associate scholar with the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society, accompanying expeditions with the National Geographic Society and the Cousteau Society, and traveling around the world for a year on this experience-based scholarship. She has also worked as a staff editor for the Cousteau Society and as a guest editor for six quarterly issues of Whalewatcher, the Journal of the American Cetacean Society. Later, she was a project manager for both Books and Beyond, a nonprofit educational organization, and for Archipelago Productions, the multimedia division of college publisher Harcourt Brace. She has written more than 50 articles for newspapers and magazines, including an article for Sports Illustrated for Kids. Three of her articles on college admissions topics appeared recently in the September 2007, October 2007, and January 2008 issues of San Diego Family Magazine.
Ms. Pickett is a member of the Higher Education Consultants Association and the Western Association for College Admissions Counseling. She completed the coursework toward a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA with a 4.0 GPA. Certificate candidates are required to complete courses in the college application process, counseling the college-bound student, financial aid fundamentals, testing and career assessment, and special issues in college counseling. Candidates must also complete a 65-hour practicum with a local school. Ms. Pickett completed her practicum at The Grauer School in Encinitas, California, during the Fall 2007 admission season.
In May 2008, Ms. Pickett launched a weekly one-hour radio show called "Countdown to College," which will air on WNSH AM-1570 in the greater Boston area. The show is aimed at the parents of college-bound high school students, and is intended to help answer important questions about preparing for college and the admissions process. Each one-hour show will contain two interviews with professional counselors (both independent and school-affiliated) and admissions personnel, plus a short profile of a college that listeners may not have otherwise heard about.
